Meath Vs Offaly Fitzsimons Cup Final December

11 Dec

Mick O’Dowd

Once again new Meath manager Mick O’Dowd started with a very inexperienced and experimental line up in the final of the Fitzsimons Cup against Offaly in Kells on sunday. But unlike the last game this meath team could not get the resuly the new boss was looking for after they slumped to a 0-16 – 0-13 point loss to Offaly. Meath won the trophy in its first year last year but they could do a repeat of last year Both teams were level at the break with 11points a piece and it looked like in the second half that Meath had the upper hand as they led by two points with fifteen minutes remaining. But Meath were not to score again and Offaly kicked five unanswered points to win the trophy. Offaly had an impressive tournament after knocking out Louth in the semi final. Hopefully Offaly can keep this form going into the O Byrne cup which is when both teams line out again in January.  At least Mick O’Dowd had a chance to see some new faces play and hopefully some of the players played themselves into the squad. Michael Newman is one of many players that impressed at times throughout the tournament. Newman plays full forward and will be looking to earn a spot there full time now.
